Etiquette at the table has changed greatly over the centuries, today we would be absolutely disgusted by what was quite common then. Man would often hunt, skin and then eat with the same knife and then turn around and use it on his enemies.
Before the invention of the fork, most people simply ate with their hands. When necessary a common spoon may have been used. The more sophisticated would eat with two knives.
Modern man eats with what can be a dizzying assortment of different forks and spoons designed for special tasks. Thankfully, most of us just have to contend with three simple utensils. At Village Kitchenware, we have some very extensive but practical surgical stainless steel flatware sets from Sterlingcraft. They include a full service for twelve along with hostess pieces. They also have a lovely gold trimmed set that is perfect for any occasion.
